External SSDs for MacBook Video Projects: APFS or exFAT?
A drive that exchanges files with a Windows PC is not automatically the right place for a Final Cut Pro library. Decide what the drive will do before you move a project onto it.

Separate working projects, file exchange and backup
For a Kenyan editor receiving footage from a client or handing a finished export to a colleague, three storage jobs can look similar: keeping the active editing library, moving ordinary files between computers, and retaining another copy in case something goes wrong. Write down which job each device will do.
This guide concerns a MacBook workflow, using the existing M5 Air storage configurations as its buying context. It does not recommend an unverified external-drive model or promise that a particular laptop runs your project at a measured speed.
Check the application requirement before the format label
Apple recommends APFS for external storage used with Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor. Its application-specific storage guidance notes that Windows-formatted drives such as exFAT or FAT32 may not behave as expected with those applications.
That is why “Mac and Windows compatible” on a drive box does not answer the whole editing-workflow question. A file-transfer use and an application-library use need separate checks. Before choosing the working location, read the storage requirements for your exact application and version.
Make a small storage map before moving a library
| Storage job | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Active editing library | Does this application support the chosen volume format and project location? |
| Client footage or exported files | Which computer must read and write these ordinary files, and what formats does it support? |
| Backup copy | Where is the second copy if the working device is unavailable? |
For a simple handover, agree the export format, file names and destination with the recipient. For collaborative editing, agree the project/library format and media-management process as well. A successfully copied video file does not prove that an entire editing library can work from the same location.
Keep application requirements separate from advertised interface speed. A compatible format cannot make a slow connection faster, and a fast interface cannot make an unsupported library location suitable. Check the drive, cable, port and application together.
Inspect first; preserve the original before changes
Apple explains how to inspect the current format: select the storage device in Finder, then use File → Get Info and look under General Information. Record which physical device and volume you are examining before considering a change.
Formatting deletes data on the affected volume. Preserve any files you need in another verified location first. Confirm that the copy opens and that you can identify the original device correctly. If this is an employer or client drive, agree the storage plan with its owner rather than changing it as part of a routine handover.
These are planning checks, not a claim that NextBuy has inspected, backed up or reformatted your drive. Keep the original material until your application can open the copied project and locate its required media.
Keep the backup job separate
Apple says a Final Cut Pro library cannot be stored on a storage device used for Time Machine backups. Plan the working-library location around that restriction rather than assuming a second folder on the backup device resolves it. Use the linked Apple application guidance for the current requirement.
If you are buying a MacBook, decide which files must remain on the laptop while you travel and which will live on a separately connected device. Our 512GB versus 1TB SSD guide covers the internal-capacity decision. This article adds the project-location and file-format checks; an external working copy does not by itself become a backup.
Check the MacBook configuration after the storage plan
MacBook Air 13-inch M5

In stockSelect an actual RAM/SSD bundle and verify the supplied package. Separate drives, cables and software are separate checks. Open the product to confirm the exact offer before ordering.
The live model-wide indication does not quote every selected configuration or include a project drive. For active-workload memory needs, use the 16GB versus 24GB RAM guide. Larger storage and more memory solve different problems.
Questions before moving projects
Is exFAT always wrong for a MacBook?
No. The intended job matters. Cross-computer file exchange and an application library are different uses; follow the requirements of the application and the other computers involved.
Should I reformat a client drive before copying its files?
Do not erase a drive merely to make its format match a preference. First preserve the required data, verify the copy and agree changes with the owner.
Does this guide prove an external SSD is as fast as the internal SSD?
No. There are no drive-speed measurements or hardware test results in this guide.
