SteamOS or Windows Handhelds in Kenya: Check Your Games First

A handheld can have enough storage for your favourite game and still be the wrong way to play it. Check the operating system, launcher, online requirements and controls before choosing a configuration.

Three checks before choosing a handheld: software support, usable controls and the exact hardware configuration
Original NextBuy Journal buying checklist. A conceptual illustration, not a game test or an official compatibility badge.

Start with five games, not a larger SSD

Write down the games you expect to play most, where you own them and whether you need online multiplayer. A Steam purchase, a different PC launcher and a subscription service are different software routes. Owning a game on another console does not by itself give you its PC version.

For a Kenyan buyer comparing imported handheld configurations, the useful first question is whether the exact software route works on the selected operating system. Then consider downloads, account access and how you will use the device away from reliable Wi-Fi. A larger SSD cannot solve an unsupported launcher or anti-cheat requirement.

SteamOS compatibility is more than whether a game starts

SteamOS is Linux-based. Proton helps run many Windows games on it, but it does not guarantee every Windows application. Valve’s compatibility review documentation considers the game together with its launcher, middleware and anti-cheat. A separate sign-in window or unsupported component can matter just as much as the game itself.

For each must-play title, check the publisher’s current platform requirements and the relevant Steam compatibility information. Pay particular attention to online multiplayer requirements. Do not infer support from the fact that a different game from the same publisher works.

Windows is the practical starting point when your required application explicitly needs Windows. It still needs a supported game, appropriate hardware and working controls. Desktop launchers, sign-in dialogs and updates can require more interaction on a small touchscreen than a console-style menu suggests.

A Steam Deck badge is not a Lenovo performance result

Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guide distinguishes Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Playable can involve extra steps, while Unknown means there is no completed rating to rely on. Read the detailed notes rather than treating all four labels as a yes-or-no list.

Those Steam Deck ratings refer to that hardware. Valve also describes compatibility reviews for other SteamOS devices. Check which device a result applies to: a Deck badge does not promise the same frame rate, display readability or control behaviour on a Legion Go S. Software support and acceptable performance are separate checks.

Look for the exact processor and configuration when assessing performance evidence. A video of a different Legion Go S processor is not a test of the Ryzen Z2 Go model below. We have not benchmarked these configurations and do not supply a frame-rate or battery-life promise.

Try the interface you will actually use

Ask whether your games work comfortably with the built-in sticks, buttons and touchscreen. A game can run yet still expect a keyboard for a launcher, small text entry or frequent pointer tasks. If your routine requires a keyboard, mouse or external display, include those separate accessories in the decision.

Before a journey, finish account setup and updates, download the intended game and check its offline requirements. Some services or modes need a connection. Do not assume installing a game once removes every later sign-in requirement. Keep sufficient free space for updates as well as the initial download.

SteamOS can suit someone who wants a Steam-centred, controller-oriented routine. Windows can suit a broader set of required Windows applications, with more PC-style administration. Choose around the software and tasks you need, rather than treating either name as a universal winner.

Operating system, RAM and storage answer different questions

ChoiceWhat to checkWhat it cannot guarantee
SteamOS or WindowsYour games, launchers and required servicesThat every PC title works
16GB or 32GB RAMThe exact game’s requirements and your workloadA different processor or automatically higher frame rates
512GB or 1TB SSDLibrary size, updates and usable free spaceSoftware compatibility or more RAM

The Legion Go S Ryzen Z2 Go listing combines these as separate configuration choices. Compare the same RAM and SSD capacities when isolating the operating-system decision. If you compare a 16GB/512GB offer with a 32GB/1TB offer, you have changed more than the software.

Lenovo’s official Go S datasheet covers more than one processor platform. Keep Ryzen Z2 Go separate from Ryzen Z1 Extreme when reading specifications. A product-family name alone is not an exact configuration.

Compare the actual Go S options

This handheld gaming example has Windows and SteamOS configurations under the Ryzen Z2 Go model. The card shows current live offers. Follow the exact configuration page to check its own availability; listing an operating-system option does not mean it is currently purchasable.

Questions before you choose

Will every Windows game run on SteamOS?

No. Check the exact game, launcher and anti-cheat requirements. A compatibility layer is not a guarantee for every Windows application.

Does 32GB RAM fix an unsupported game?

No. More memory cannot add missing platform or anti-cheat support. Check compatibility before paying for extra capacity.

Should I choose an operating system by the case colour?

No. Use the exact configuration name and product details. Photos illustrate the hardware; the selected operating-system and capacity options determine which offer you are inspecting.
