Camcorder SDI vs HDMI in Kenya: Start with the Switcher Input
Before choosing a camera for church services, conferences or live events, write down the input and signal your production system needs. Similar cameras can have different connections.

Read the switcher’s requirements before choosing the camera
A camera’s internal recording specification does not tell you which input your switcher accepts. For a Kenyan church, school or event team extending an existing system, begin with the actual receiver: its model, input connector and documented supported signals.
Then trace the route back to the camera, including any converter, cable and monitoring equipment. If a quotation simply says “4K camera for livestreaming”, ask the operator to write down the intended connection. That makes the purchase discussion more concrete than comparing a collection of maximum-resolution labels.
HDMI and SDI describe interfaces, not a universal ranking of picture quality. Choose the connection that meets the documented production requirement. A passive cable is not proof that incompatible outputs and inputs have been converted into a working signal.
A matching connector still needs a matching signal
Confirm resolution and frame rate across the entire route. A receiver with an SDI input does not automatically accept every SDI format. Similarly, an HDMI input does not establish that the switcher accepts every mode a camera can output.
Sony’s NX800/Z200 Monitoring menu reference separates output on/off, output format and whether on-screen information appears in the outgoing picture. Use those controls to check the actual programme feed, rather than assuming the camera’s own display is exactly what the audience sees.
Recording and live output are separate checks. The Z200 output-format table describes combinations for its SDI and HDMI outputs. Read the table for the selected system and recording settings; a high-frame-rate recording label alone is not a promise of the same live output.
NX800 and Z200 show why the connection belongs in the buying decision
HXR-NX800: an HDMI-based camera option
The HXR-NX800 has HDMI video output. Its catalogue also lists live-streaming and network capabilities, which are different routes from feeding a switcher through a video connector. For this decision, first establish whether its HDMI output meets your actual receiving system.

PXW-Z200: SDI and external timecode alongside HDMI
The PXW-Z200 adds SDI output supporting 12G, 6G, 3G and HD-SDI, alongside HDMI. Sony’s shared specifications mark SDI and BNC timecode input/output as Z200-only connections. Those features can justify choosing it when the production chain requires them.

External timecode answers a separate synchronisation question
Timecode helps identify corresponding points in recordings. The Z200’s external timecode connections are a distinct feature from its video output. The NX800’s internal timecode listing should not be read as external BNC input/output.
If your editor or production operator requires a shared timing reference, include that requirement explicitly. Do not assume a matching video cable configures every synchronisation task. Sony documents external timecode operation in the model help guide; use the procedure appropriate to the equipment being connected.
Approve the complete programme path before the first important event
| Write down | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Receiver and input | The exact switcher, recorder or capture device and its supported input modes. |
| Camera output | The intended output is enabled and its format agrees with the receiver. |
| Cable and conversion | The installed route supports that signal; any converter is checked as part of the chain. |
| Programme result | Picture, sound, overlays and recording behave as intended through the actual system. |
| Timing | Any external timecode requirement has its own supported configuration. |
Ask the operator responsible for the system to demonstrate the planned mode before a service or paid event. Check a recorded sample as well as the preview. This guide promises no cable distance, converter compatibility or measured latency.
For a separate small-camera computer-call workflow, our Pocket 3 webcam guide explains why a USB-C connector does not automatically mean HDMI output. Its connection instructions are specific to that camera and do not replace these camcorder checks.
Questions and the manufacturer’s demonstration
Does NX800 have the Z200’s SDI connection?
No. Sony identifies the SDI output and external BNC timecode connections as PXW-Z200-only features.
Does a 4K recording mode prove a switcher will receive 4K?
No. Check the selected output format and the receiver’s supported input, along with every stage between them.
Is external timecode the same as having SDI video output?
No. Treat the timing requirement and video-signal requirement as separate configuration checks.
