PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

PlayStation 5 Overview

The PlayStation 5 price in Kenya is KShs 73,500. The original 825GB PS5 is a home console for players who want the PS5 library, responsive DualSense controls and fast SSD loading in the original full-size design. Its Disc and Digital Editions share the same core gaming experience, but differ in how you buy and use games. If entertainment-unit space or a later disc-drive upgrade matters, compare the PlayStation 5 Slim before choosing this original model.

Disc Edition: useful for an existing physical collection

The Disc Edition has an integrated Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. It reads compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs and supports suitable movie discs, while also allowing PlayStation Store downloads. That gives you more purchase options and lets you continue using compatible physical games you already own.

Disc games normally install data to the SSD and need the disc inserted to play. Updates and some game content may still require downloads, so a boxed game is not a guarantee of a completely offline installation. Check individual games for internet requirements.

Digital Edition: decide on downloads from the start

The original Digital Edition has no disc drive. It is suited to a library bought digitally through your PlayStation account, but cannot read physical PS5 or PS4 games or movie discs. It does not receive a graphics penalty simply because the drive is absent.

Unlike Slim Digital Edition, this original Digital model cannot be converted by attaching Sony’s separately sold drive. That accessory is for specified Slim and Pro model groups. If you expect to borrow, collect or buy game discs later, choose the Disc Edition now or consider a compatible newer model. Sony’s disc-drive compatibility guide explains the supported model groups.

825GB SSD and managing a growing library

Both editions listed here have an 825GB internal SSD. Part of that capacity is reserved for system software, and the remaining space is shared by installations, updates and applications. The number of games that fit depends heavily on their sizes rather than a fixed capacity-to-game count.

A compatible M.2 SSD meeting Sony’s requirements can expand playable game storage. USB extended storage is useful for holding PS5 games between transfers and running supported PS4 games; PS5 games cannot run directly from it. If your internet connection is metered, keeping games on suitable storage can reduce repeated downloads.

4K display support and game performance

PS5 supports 4K output and up to 120fps in compatible games. The actual combination depends on the game’s graphics mode and the display. These figures do not mean that every title renders native 4K at 120fps. A compatible screen and HDMI input are needed for high-refresh modes.

A good 4K HDR television can show detailed scenes and supported HDR effects, while a 120Hz screen matters for games with high-frame-rate options. For enhanced graphics capabilities in supported titles, compare the PlayStation 5 Pro. The original PS5 remains part of the same PS5 game platform.

DualSense feedback and playing together

One DualSense wireless controller is supplied with each standard package. Supported games use haptics to represent impacts and textures, and adaptive triggers to vary resistance during actions. The pre-installed ASTRO’s PLAYROOM provides an introduction to these controller features.

For supported local multiplayer, add another compatible controller when the game requires one per player. The included microphone is convenient for quick chat; a headset can make longer sessions more comfortable. A second controller, charging station and other paid games are not implied by this one-controller package.

PS4 compatibility and moving your collection

Supported PS4 games can be played on PS5, with a drive needed for physical copies. Digital titles must be accessed using the appropriate owning account. Save transfers, upgrade pricing and access to a PS5 version vary by title; owning a PS4 release does not automatically include every newer edition.

Neither PS5 edition is a universal player for original PlayStation, PS2 or PS3 discs. Classics offered through digital purchases or subscriptions are separate from physical-disc compatibility. Check the specific game rather than relying only on the PlayStation name.

Placement and getting started

The original chassis is larger than Slim, so allow sufficient space for ventilation, cables and disc access on the Disc Edition. Its supplied base supports the recommended horizontal or vertical setup; follow the instructions for your hardware revision. This is different from standard Slim packages, whose vertical stand is separate.

You will need a suitable display, mains power and internet for updates and downloads. Eligible offline games can be played with the appropriate account settings, while online-only games remain connected experiences. Most paid-game online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus; some free-to-play games are exceptions. The embedded video is PlayStation’s original hardware reveal, and Sony’s PS5 history page distinguishes this design from later revisions.
