The iPad mini A17 Pro makes sense when a tablet should be easy to hold, carry and use for short sessions throughout the day. Think reading, quick handwritten notes, travel documents and a compact sketchbook. The Apple iPad Air 11-inch (M4) is the more comfortable choice for long typing sessions and larger documents; the mini earns its place by being smaller, not by offering the largest workspace.
The laminated Liquid Retina IPS display has 2266 × 1488 resolution, P3 colour, an antireflective coating and up to 500 nits brightness. Text and sketches stay crisp without needing a large tablet in your bag. At 60Hz it does not offer ProMotion, and the smaller area leaves less room for multiple windows or a drawing canvas beside reference material. The Wi-Fi model weighs 293g and the Cellular model 297g before a case or Pencil, which helps explain its appeal as a reading and field-notes companion.
The A17 Pro pairs a 6-core CPU with a 5-core GPU for compatible creative apps, games and everyday work. It supports Apple Intelligence with the required software and supported language/region settings. Apple Pencil Pro is compatible and gives artists pressure sensitivity, squeeze, barrel roll and magnetic wireless pairing/charging. Apple Pencil (USB-C) also works for handwriting and markup, but lacks pressure sensitivity. Apple Pencil 2 from an older iPad mini 6 setup will not work with this model, so include the correct pen in any upgrade budget.
128GB works for a lighter library of documents, books and streamed entertainment. Choose 256GB for more downloaded video, games and creative files. 512GB suits buyers who expect substantial offline content and want to manage storage less frequently. Storage does not change the A17 Pro CPU or GPU configuration. There is no microSD slot and internal capacity is fixed; external USB-C storage is useful for file transfer but cannot simply become extra internal app storage. Keep some headroom for updates and project exports.
Both options have Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Choose Wi-Fi when trusted networks or a phone hotspot cover your use. Wi-Fi + Cellular adds direct 5G/LTE data and GPS/GNSS, useful when location-based apps and connectivity away from a router matter. This generation uses eSIM rather than a physical SIM card. Confirm iPad activation, coverage and data-plan support with your carrier in Kenya; Cellular is not a guarantee of reception everywhere and cannot be added to the Wi-Fi model later.
The mini has no Smart Connector or dedicated Apple Magic Keyboard case. A compatible Bluetooth keyboard can handle occasional typing, but an Air offers a better foundation for a keyboard-first workstation. The 12MP Center Stage front camera sits on the portrait edge, unlike the landscape layout of newer Air and Pro models. The rear 12MP camera is useful for scanning documents and recording 4K video. USB-C supports data up to 10Gb/s and one external display up to 4K at 60Hz with suitable cables or adapters.
Compare the Apple iPad mini (A20 Pro) if OLED contrast, its landscape front camera or its newer processor are priorities. The A17 Pro model remains a distinct option for buyers who prefer its price and familiar compact LCD design. Do not reuse a case or Pencil solely on the basis of the “mini” name: check the exact generation, dimensions and accessory compatibility. Neither model should be chosen as a laptop replacement without first checking your required iPadOS apps.
Apple rates up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or video and up to 9 hours of cellular browsing, with actual use varying by app, brightness and reception. The iPad mini and 1m USB-C cable are included. Apple’s US specification lists a 20W USB-C adapter; some regional packages omit it. Confirm the supplied box and plug with NextBuy before ordering. Apple Pencil, keyboard, case and mobile-data plan are separate.
See Apple’s model-specific A17 Pro technical specifications. The product video is an independent Lon.TV review of this generation; its prices and regional package are not the NextBuy offer.
