DJI RS 5 Overview

The DJI RS 5 price in Kenya is KShs 107,500. This three-axis camera gimbal suits wedding filmmakers, commercial videographers and small production teams working with a balanced mirrorless setup up to 3kg. Fine adjustment on every axis, automated locks and native vertical mounting help you move between locations and formats with less setup friction. Compare the DJI RS 4 if your priority is straightforward stabilisation; the RS 5 is particularly attractive when its new tracking and electronic-handle options fit your workflow.

Build around the camera and lens, not payload alone

The 3kg tested payload is a starting point for compatibility. Weigh the camera, lens, plate and mounted accessories together, then check whether the rig can balance and move without touching the arms. A long lens or tall cage can create a clearance problem even below the weight limit. The official DJI camera and lens compatibility tool also distinguishes physical support from available shutter, focus and zoom controls.

The gimbal and battery grip weigh approximately 1.46kg before adding your camera, tripod or extra handles. For a lighter travel rig, compare the DJI RS 4 Mini. For heavier equipment, investigate the DJI RS 4 Pro with the exact lens and accessories you intend to use.

Balancing and switching between horizontal and vertical filming

Fine-tuning knobs on all three axes help you make small balance adjustments without repeatedly sliding past the right position. Low-friction interlayers make that process smoother, but the camera still needs correct mechanical balance before motor tuning. Recheck balance after changing lenses, adding accessories or changing a zoom lens’s extension.

Second-generation automated axis locks secure the arms when the gimbal sleeps or powers off and release them for use. Native vertical shooting lets you remount for portrait footage without buying a separate vertical bracket. This is useful when a job needs both landscape coverage and social clips; it does not remove the need to check balance and cable clearance after the change.

Tracking that helps with composition

The RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module gives RS 5 touchscreen subject selection and supports a person, vehicle, pet or manually selected subject. It helps a solo operator hold a composition while moving or presenting. The module is an accessory included with the Combo packages, rather than a camera built into the Standard gimbal.

Tracking moves the gimbal; the recording camera and lens still determine focus and image quality. DJI’s guidance limits tracking to suitable single-subject situations and cautions against fast vehicles, erratic pets, heavily obscured subjects and confusing crowds. Its specified tracking distance is 0.5–10m under suitable lighting, not a promise of reliable results in every scene.

Understand the five RS 5 packages

Standard supplies the gimbal, BG33 battery grip, Quick-Open Tripod, mounting plates and basic support accessories. The Combo adds the Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, Electronic Briefcase Handle, carrying case and short L-shaped cable. The electronic handle provides controls while holding the camera low, making it useful for low-angle walking shots rather than merely serving as a passive grip.

SDR Transmission Combo combines the Standard gimbal kit with the original DJI SDR transmitter and receiver equipment. It does not include the tracking module and electronic handle just because “Combo” appears in its name. Combo + SDR Transmission combines both the tracking/handle package and the original transmission kit. Combo + SDR Transmission 2 pairs the tracking/handle package with two SDR Transmission 2 transceivers and their supplied adapters and cables.

Choose a transmission bundle when another person needs to monitor the camera remotely. Allow separately for the recording camera, suitable video connection, receiving display and required power equipment. A wireless video link and an intelligent tracking camera solve different problems; neither replaces the other.

Control the shot and improve walking technique

The 1.8-inch OLED touchscreen, joystick, trigger and front dial give access to gimbal settings and supported camera functions. Pan Follow suits level moves; Pan and Tilt Follow lets the camera follow a change in height or angle. FPV and roll effects are more deliberate creative choices. Bluetooth camera control depends on the model and its settings; a compatible wired connection may be needed.

RS 5’s Z-axis indicator gives feedback on vertical movement so you can adjust your footsteps. It is not a fourth motor that physically removes walking bounce. Smooth steps, a balanced rig and a planned route remain important, especially when the lens makes small movements obvious.

Power for a filming day

With the BG33 grip, DJI quotes up to fourteen hours of standby from a balanced, stationary gimbal. Moving the camera and using accessories reduces operating time. The detachable grip can be recharged in approximately one hour using a suitable 65W USB PD charger under DJI’s test conditions. A charger is not listed in the supplied kit.

Check the official RS 5 specifications before planning a long shoot. Budget power for the camera and any transmission equipment separately: the gimbal’s standby rating is not the runtime of an entire production setup.
